What to Expect at Your First Virtual Speech Session
If you’re new to virtual speech therapy, you might be wondering what your child’s first session will look like. At MAPS Speech Therapy, we want you to feel prepared, comfortable, and confident before you log in for your first session. Here’s what you can expect from that very first online session after the initial evaluation:
1. A Warm Welcome and Tech Check
We’ll start by making sure your video and audio are working. If you’re using a computer, tablet, or even a phone, we’ll walk you through any quick adjustments so you and your child can see and hear clearly. If any troubleshooting needs to take place, we will try our best to support you so things run smoothly.
2. Getting to Know Your Child
The first session is all about connection. We’ll spend time saying hello, incorporating your child’s interests and strengths into the session, and finding ways to make therapy fun from the start. Depending on your child’s age and interests, the session may be play-based with toys you already have at home or there may be interactive learning games used on the computer.
3. Parent/Caregiver Involvement
Your involvement is a very important role in sessions—especially in telehealth. The SLP you’re working with will coach you on how to support your child’s communication during and between sessions using items you already have at home. You don’t need any new or fancy materials—just your participation and variations to activities your child already enjoys at home.
4. Activities
The activities in the first session are designed to be build rapport while introducing your children to their speech and language goals. This first session provides us with valuable insight to your child’s strengths and needs. We might:
Use toys you already have at home for play-based speech
Use interactive online learning games
Model communication strategies for you to try at home
5. Wrapping Up and Next Steps
At the end of the session, we’ll summarize the progress from the session, answer your questions, and share recommendations or strategies. We’ll also confirm your child’s therapy schedule and talk about what to expect in the upcoming session.
